Assalamu Alaikum,

It’s been a long time since I last wrote on TrickAndTech. Today, I suddenly felt like writing again. Stay with TrickAndTech to get new tricks and tips regularly. Without further ado, let’s get to the point.

Many of us buy old (used) mobile phones. But some people fall into big trouble after buying used phones! If we are just a bit more careful and alert when purchasing an old phone, we can avoid trouble. We must consider a few key points before buying used phones. Some people buy phones from known contacts and still end up in trouble.

Nowadays, mobile phones are as helpful as they are risky. In this age of advanced technology, we’ve come a long way. But if we’re not careful, we might get into serious trouble because of it.

There have been cases where someone buys an old phone, inserts a SIM, and within 3–4 days, the police show up and confiscate the phone! Not only that, but many people also face different problems after buying used phones. Some phones turn out to be fake (clones), others severely damaged—only discovered after bringing them home.

If you pay attention to these 8 things before buying a used phone, you’ll be safe and avoid getting scammed.

8 Things to Check Before Buying a Used Phone:

1) Check for original documents or warranty papers.

Before buying, always check whether the phone has valid documents or warranty. Some people provide fake papers, which are hard to detect. Examine the papers thoroughly and ensure they match the phone. Some unknown sellers give fake warranty cards claiming they’re original. You may believe them and end up paying a lot for that phone—only to get into trouble.

2) Carefully check the IMEI number.

Always verify the IMEI before buying. Some sellers provide a different box that doesn’t match the phone’s IMEI. Such frauds are very common nowadays. Bring someone experienced with you to verify everything. To check the IMEI, dial *#06# and match it with the box, or go to imei.info.

3) Inspect the phone’s physical condition.

This is very important. You can usually tell from the outside if the phone has been opened or repaired. Check for scratches, dents, or cracks on the display. Also, inspect whether the body was opened or any part was repaired.

4) Check battery condition.

Battery problems are common with used phones. Test the backup before buying. Does it charge properly? Does the charge drain too fast? Also, check whether the battery has been replaced.

5) Check the hardware.

Test the camera, sound, microphone, and speaker. Make sure the charging port and headphone jack are working. Ensure the network works and that calls can be made and received. These are the most common problems in used phones. If you check everything properly, you can avoid future trouble. Remember—most people only sell phones when there’s a problem.

6) Check for account lock or login.

Before buying, make sure the phone is not locked or logged into someone’s account. For example:

  • iPhone: Apple ID
  • Xiaomi: Mi Account
  • Vivo: Vivo Account

Ask the seller to log out. If accounts are not logged out, you might not be able to reset the phone and could face many issues. In some cases, you might even have to open up the phone to fix it. Be cautious about this.

7) Check if the phone is original or a copy.

Verify whether the phone is genuine or a fake (clone). Some scammers sell copy phones pretending they’re original. Bring someone knowledgeable to help you verify. Copy phones often look exactly like real ones. Check against the box carefully. There are many YouTube videos showing how to verify original phones. Nowadays, almost every model has a clone version—so stay alert.

8) Never buy a phone without its box.

Always match the phone with its original box. Never buy a phone without a box—no matter how trustworthy the seller seems. Some people sell stolen phones, and later file a police report. When you insert a SIM, your NID (national ID) gets linked, and the police may come and seize the phone.

In Conclusion:

Before buying a used phone, make sure to check all aspects thoroughly. A small mistake can lead to big problems later. If you consider these 8 tips, you’ll likely avoid serious trouble. So, always buy used phones with caution.

That’s all for today. I’ll be back with another topic soon. Until then, stay safe and well. Please forgive any mistakes.
